Water Conservation Tips for Vacationers

Venice Beach is one of California’s most famous attractions, but there is more to Venice then surfers, sand, waves, and muscles.  Just a few blocks East of the ocean is one of the coolest boulevards in America.

Named after the famed local developer and conservationist, Abbot Kinney Boulevard is known around the world for its eclectic collection of art galleries, clothing stores, restaurants and hang outs. Both a burgeoning tourist attraction and locals’ gathering spot, this diagonal stretch is lively 365 days a year.  However, on the First Friday of every month, Abbot Kinney really heats up.

What began in 2008 as a small community affair to support local businesses has grown into one of the Westside’s favorite monthly traditions.  The first difference you notice upon arrival at dusk are the 50+ food trucks lining both sides of the boulevard.  Nearly every type of food you can imagine is available from deep fried desserts to healthy vegan options.  For the adventurous it is possible to go on an around-the-world taste bud tour from Mexico to Korea and every type of fusion in-between.

Prefer to dine in style (at a table)? Abbot Kinney has a well-deserved reputation for creative foodie fare led by some innovative chefsAlways at the top of every food critic’s list are Gjelina and The Tasting Kitchen.  Reservations at either are hard to come by so book in advance.  A little easier to get into and perfect for Sunday Brunch are Hal’s Bar & Grill, Primitivo and Joe’s.   If you prefer to picnic at the beach, first stop at  Gjelina Take Away or Lemonade for salads and pizzas.   If it is just one of those days and you need a shot of caffeine, the TOMS Shoes store has a great coffee bar and Abbot’s Habit is where the famous locals go to not be seen.

While you are eating your way along Abbot Kinney, check out the “Venice-eclectic” boutiques and home-grown art galleries that stay open into the night.  From modern chic to old school vintage, there is something for a diverse range of tastes. Spend hours exploring your soul at Mystic Journey Bookstore, Will Leather Goods, or one of the many local handmade clothing boutiques like AviatorNation.  The G2 Gallery showcases nature photography from up-and-coming talent while C.A.V.E. Gallery focuses on audio and visual expression.

The evening only gets more exciting with free multimedia and DJ performances at Electric Lodge in the entirely solar powered building.  A variety of local musicians can be found along the boulevard as well.  Abbot Kinney First Fridays is the ultimate community all-ages event that celebrates the best local artists, gifts, products, and music Venice has to offer.
