Temescal Canyon
Located just off Sunset Blvd in the Pacific Palisades, Temescal Canyon Park is the perfect getaway for a scenic and challenging hike close to the city. The canyon loop poses roughly 1,000 feet in elevation change and reaches 2.6 miles in length—though hikers can choose either shorter or longer distances depending on their route. Nature lovers will love the dense vegetation, vast canyon scenery, and panoramic views of the Pacific coastline.
Malibu Creek
With more than 30 miles of trails spread across 10,000 acres of coastal terrain, Malibu Creek Park is one LA’s most diverse hiking destinations. The creek itself is the largest watershed in the Santa Monica Mountains and meanders through 25 miles of unique volcanic rock. A popular spot for shooting films, movie buffs might even recognize the scenery from classics like “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and “The Planet of the Apes.”
Calabasas Peak Summit
For a panoramic view over the Santa Monica Mountains, Red Rock Canyon Park, and the San Fernando Valley, look no further than Calabasas. A 3.6-mile hike to the peak and back, this is a relatively strenuous journey—thanks to 900 feet in elevation change—rewarded by inspiring scenery at every turn. Pay special attention to the area’s unique sandstone terrain, a perfect example of California’s renowned coastal geology.
