For centuries, the XY chromosome has dominated the winemaking industry. Women were in the kitchen, while men tended the vines. That paradigm, like so many others in today’s business world is shifting.
This month, Casa del Mar and By the Blue Sea Restaurants celebrate this shift and the rise of the female vintner with Women in Wine.
Beginning April 7th, every restaurant and bar located in Casa del Mar will feature a wines by the glass program with over two dozen wines crafted by the world’s most pioneering female vintners. Many of these trailblazing women will host educational tastings as well as exclusive receptions and dinners.
Here is just a taste of the talent Casa is bringing to the table:
* Former U.S. Ambassador to Austria and community activist, Kathryn Walt Hall heads up Walt Hall Winery. Kathryn and her family have owned 63 sprawling acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamay, Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc in the Redwood Valley since 1972. All of Hall’s vineyards have been certified Organic by California Certified Organic Farmers, a process that takes up to 3 years to complete. A true Renaissance woman, read more about her here.
* Tara Gomez of Kitá Winery. KitáWines is located in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley. Tara is the General Manager and ONLY female Native American winemaker in the United States. Her dream has always been to ‘give back’ to her Chumash Indian tribe whom, in 2010, acquired the respected Camp 4 vineyard formerly owned by Fess Parker in order to help her achieve that goal. Find out more about Tara’s roots.
* Julianne Laks is the head of Napa’s celebrated Cakebread Cellars. Julianne is the third winemaker in Cakebread Cellars’ history and the only non-family member to hold this prestigious position. Find out how she achieved this almost unprecedented feat.
Each month we will bring you more stories about these great women and their quest to create perfect balance in their lives and in their wines.
Come taste the fruit of their passion….
Women in Wine will run April 7th – July 7th. Event schedule can be found on the home page of www.bytheblueseasantamonica.com. For event reservations call 310-581-7714.
