Every character imaginable can be found on the Santa Monica Pier. For locals, it provides constant entertainment. Its quirks and flare make it the perfect location for the oddity and beauty of Totem, the next Cirque du Soleil show set to open on January 17th under the Grand Chapiteau at the Santa Monica Pier.
Totem. The evolution of man. A grandiose concept for most, but knowing Cirque, one can only imagine what unique and thrilling perspective the show will bring to eager audiences.
The show begins humankind in its amphibian state. As the plot evolves, science and legend intertwine, connecting man to other species. Characters include: The Amerindian- a dancer who traces history of the evolution of species with his famous rings, the Scientist- an explorer who visits different parts of the world, and Valentino- the “macho, chatty, boastful, provocateur” tell the story in a seamlessly creative way.
Robert Lepage, writer and director of Totem, returns to astonish Cirque du Soleil novices and newbies alike. He won audiences over with Cirque’s ‘KA’ in 2004. Lepage began his career in a fury, directing 5 plays in 5 years. In his 5th year, in 1992, he was the first North American to direct a Shakespearean play at the Royal National Theatre in London.
Before heading to the show, make a stop at COAST Beach Café & Bar for their ‘Cirque Du Special.’ During Totem’s run, January 31th to March 16th- Coast Beach Café & Bar will offer a special menu for the attendees of Totem. The price -$29 per person- which will include a choice of 2 appetizers; roasted beet salad or Dungeness crab cake; 2 entrees; local Swordfish or spaghetti as well as a selected sweet dessert-Salted Caramel Popcorn with hot chocolate, coffee or hot tea- which you can eat in or take to go as you stroll down the boardwalk to the Grand Chapiteau.
